My daughter just joined a club soccer team. If I am being honest, I wasn’t fully convinced she would be able to hang. But her being on the team was a vehicle that allowed our family to have a bit more flexibility. I didn’t have to coach, and we had a carpool situation… blah blah blah. I digress.
With that said, she had a game a couple weeks ago where she didn’t sub out the whole game. She worked her little tail off. She did a lot of the hard work that doesn’t always get praised.
Hustled back to cover.
Won the ball back after losing it.
Made the runs even though the pass didn’t come.
After the game, she dug her head in my chest and cried. She had won the game and played super well, so I was confused. But my wife cued me in that she was so exhausted she just needed to cry it out.
Her willingness to do the hard thing was so impressive. On the way home we were able to talk about how satisfying it was for her to be on the other side of the game, knowing she had given it her best.
Again, another reminder for me as her dad.
No matter what, giving my best in parenting, as a husband and in work is so important and vital to living.
